What are art commissions?

An art commission is custom artwork you pay an artist to create to your request: your character, your pet, your emote, your album cover. The buyer describes what they want, the artist quotes a price and timeline, work proceeds through sketch and revision stages, and payment is typically split or taken upfront. Prices range from about $20 for a simple sketch to several hundred dollars for detailed illustrations, set by each artist.
How commissioning works, step by step
- You find an artist whose existing style you like; you are buying their style, not a generic service.
- You check their commission sheet for prices, what they will and will not draw, and open slots.
- You send a request with references and details, and the artist confirms scope, price and timeline.
- Payment is made upfront or half-up-front; established artists rarely work on pure promise.
- The artist shares a sketch for approval, then finishes; small revisions are usually included, big changes cost extra.
- You receive the files, with usage rights as agreed (personal use is standard; commercial use costs more).

The "70/30 rule", cleared up
The 70/30 rule that appears alongside commission searches is a composition guideline: roughly 70% of an artwork kept calm so the detailed 30% draws the eye. It is not a payment split between artist and platform, and no standard 70/30 payment arrangement exists in commissioning.
Are commissions legal? Rights, briefly
Commissions are ordinary freelance contracts, fully legal. By default the artist keeps copyright and the buyer gets agreed usage; commercial rights (merch, thumbnails for a monetized channel, branding) should be named in the agreement and usually cost more. Fan-art commissions of trademarked characters occupy a tolerated gray zone for personal use, but commercial use of someone else's IP is the buyer's risk.
